Fun Sticks - Junior Hockey
What is it?
Running for an hour a week over 12 weeks, this START program is designed and
developed for 5 and 6 year old tamariki who are ‘new’ players to the game of
hockey. Player centred coaching lets the children explore and learn by actively
doing.
• Fun and enjoyment
• Learn by doing
• Develop fundamental sport movements – running, weaving, backwards
• Learn hockey skills through small games
• Have lots of turns
• Be in a safe environment with appropriate modified equipment
• 8 weeks are sessions with a mixture of fundamental skills, game sense, hockey
skills and fun games encouraging hand-eye coordination and learning by doing
• An innovation for 2022 is that in the last 3-4 weeks 6v6 games will be
organised to transition players through to mini hockey for 2023.
Who runs it?
Tauranga Hockey Association runs this nationally utilised program in conjunction
with primary schools across the Western Bay of Plenty.
The sessions are run by a combination of volunteer parent coaches, and
secondary school students. Coordinators are trained, reimbursed, provided with
all the gear and supported by THA development staff.
